How to Compost
- Make sure you introduce these red wigglers to their new home as soon as you can!
- Our worms are shipped in dry soil mediums to ensure that the worms don't drown in transit. Once the worms arrive, you will need to hydrate them with ½ cup of water as soon as possible to get them up and moving again.
- To start composting, you will need a worm bin or home, bedding, live worms, and of course—organic waste!
- To start your worm bin, you will need bedding, like old newspaper or cardboard. Don’t forget to soak your bedding! Worms enjoy environments that are 75% water.
- Once the bedding is soaked, wring out the material until it is moist, but not dripping, and place in the bottom of your bin.
- Next, add a gritty material such as egg shells, saw dust, fine sand, or leaves. This helps the worms grind up their food!
- Finally, spread the worms on top of the pile of bedding. Leave the worms alone for about a week to allow them to get used to their new home. During this time, the worms will feed on the bedding.
- After the week is up, you can start feeding your worms!
- Remember, worms tend to prefer temps of 55-90°F and it’s important that you don’t overfeed them!
- To avoid a smelly worm bin, start out feeding them little amounts every 2 to 3 days until you understand the amount of food they can consume. It’s standard practice to feed them their weight in food everyday.
- Your worms won’t need any new gritty material until you harvest your worm castings and clean your bin. Be sure to chop all food scraps into smaller pieces so the worms can gobble them up!
